Tapes 'N Tapes Talks
For the past four months, Tapes 'N Tapes lead singer Josh Grier has been taking it easy. Noticeably absent from many of the websites that helped catapult the Minneapolis band in 2006 with their debut, self-released album The Loon, Grier was a bit concerned with what has come to be the norm in the Internet world: overexposure.
"I think it is good to take time and write a record and not be in everyone's face all the time," he says. "The last four months we've been home writing music. If people were writing about us now, that'd be weird."
And yet many are looking to see if Tapes 'N Tapes can keep up their previous buzz. According to Grier, the band has just finished the demos for their sophomore album, currently untitled, and is aiming for a fall release. They'll be playing the new songs for the first time next week when they will headline the 2K7 Hit And Run Tour with Harlem Shakes.
"It's kinda hard to say if [the new album] will be different," Grier explains. "At least for me it feels like we always try to do something different with all of our songs, so in that way they are in the same vein. I wouldn't say it's a radical departure. We've been playing the same songs for a year and a half, so starting to write and playing new ones on tour will been nice."
Grier does admit the recording process will be vastly altered. The band laid down their debut, The Loon, in 2004 in a cabin in Wisconsin with no running water. This time, they'll head into a proper studio with a producer, although no plans have been made as of yet. When the tour is over in June, they'll roll tape. Grier is excited about what has been written so far, and says having a label involved hasn't changed his process.
"I've sent [XL] a first round of demos and they were all excited, that's about the level of input we've gotten back," he says. "No conference calls on how we have to change songs. The only difference is that we just know they are there."
Grier has yet to feel the pressure of living up to the previous hype, and knows that once the album is released another round of touring is in place. But the four months living back home in Minnesota has kept him grounded. "Maybe I'll start an intramural softball league," he says. "Who knows what will happen, there's nothing we can control other than making good music. I think people psych themselves out a lot of the times, we just want to make an album better than the last one."
